National council seeking Mizzou syllabi loses appeal

For the past two years, the National Council on Teacher Quality has pursued legal action to force the University of Missouri System to release its professors’ syllabi.

This week, it lost its latest appeal for the documents, which it argued were public under the Missouri Sunshine Law.

The Missouri Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court ruling that the university system did not have to release the records because they were “exempted from disclosure under the Sunshine Law by the Federal Copyright Act.”

Kate Walsh, president of the Washington, D.C.-based group, told the Columbia Missourian that the group planned to continue its appeals:

We just got this decision and are weighing our options but will aggressively pursue all options before us, as we remain convinced that the merits of the case are on our side.
